If any business is not online, it’s in trouble. If your customers are not able to buy or interact online, 24 hours a day, seven days a week, they are already buying from your competitors. This was said at a recent discussing the importance of having a strong online presence, which allows businesses to advertise their products and services, attract customers and build brand credibility. It is said that those businesses who have successfully navigated five months of lockdown and were able to go virtual, are thriving. While those that have not yet managed to move from a physical to virtual space are suffering. The increasing threat of the Coronavirus has made a remote workforce the norm in record time, and it may result in making working from home a longstanding and necessary measure where possible. The extraordinary times we find ourselves in, call for some seriously creative thinking, because without adapting quickly, most businesses will find itself in troubled waters. For a remote working arrangement, please consider the following:

Internet – of course, you need internet for your staff to work remotely, shop around for a reliable solution, whether fixed line or wireless; typically a wireless solution would not involve installation and thus quicker to get in place, but could be more expensive.
Email – with a small amount of effort, most email accounts can be configured or routed so that employees can access email from home.

The Importance of the Internet (for your business)

With 21 days of lock-down looming, it simply means (amongst other things), that: a) more people will spend vasts amounts of time on the Internet (which is a good thing for you), and b) your website needs to be ready for an increase in website visitors by providing relevant information w.r.t. how you will conduct business during and after the lock-down. Business as Usual

With the reality of Covid-19 in South Africa, we are all in uncharted territory right now and one could expect irrational behavior as a result. And in times like this, we all need a bit of certainty in order to avoid chaos. The contribution that Infinity Web would like to make is to ensure that we stay the course and deliver a service to you that is even more crucial than a week before, as one quickly realizes that the current situation puts a lot of emphasis on the online environment for both information and for doing business. In the end we will adapt no matter how the situation looks like in 3-4 months from now; we dont have any other option really as we need to keep the wheels of the economy moving forward even if at a slower pace. The 4 day workweek and 2020

In a recent article, Microsoft in Japan reduced the work week during summer to only 4 days and made some other changes in the workplace, which then resulted in a 40% increase in productivity. Not only that, the cost of office printing and the consumption of electricity also went down significantly. They concluded that employees who work less might actually be working smarter. Economists have recently argued that a four-day workweek allows employees to focus their attention more effectively, and create a better sense of work-life balance. The point being that working more is not always the best way to get ahead, we need to explore other ways to achieve this goal. This is very relevant in the South African context where business’ and service providers need to think creatively and work smarter in face of the increasing number of challenges. One way in which one could work smarter and more effectively, is to ensure that your online presence, specifically a company website, is optimized towards its purpose and serve the needs of both the company and its customers. 2020 will no doubt be a year where business entities would need to pull up its sleeves and even take hands where necessary. The Gig Economy

In a recent Cape Argus article, the writer mentions the term “Gig Economy“, and any information technology (IT) minded person would think it relates to the IT industry, which is actually wrong BUT indirectly is does! Explanation: The gig economy is a labour market characterized by freelance, flexible, on-demand work rather than the more traditional nine-to- five working model. The term comes back to the (IT) infrastructure that companies and services providers put in place to accommodate such a freelance or short term workforce, attracting them, keeping track the work they do and paying them, all which relates to IT. Considering the pace at which 2019 has started and persisted, perhaps it is a good idea to take a proper coffee break outside the normal work environment and contemplate whether there are shortcomings or possible enhancements that you should consider. Not only for the second half of 2019, but for 2020 also, especially since we are moving at light speed towards a new year.

HTTPs or Not?

Have you recently became aware of the “s” behind the HTTP in your browser? Google has again started pushing website owners to “secure” website by installing SSL’s (stands for Secure Sockets Layer) that encrypts website traffic (data) that goes to and from the website visitor. This for even websites that do not store customer data or do online payments and transactions. The problem with non-compliance with the giant’s wishes is that your ranking will be negatively affected and even some visual browser warning will appear that could scare off potential clients. Even though this smells like blackmail, one can either resist, or go with the flow and pay a R1,500 per year more. Fortunately, Infinity Web is working on a cost effective solution to secure client website traffic, more to follow shortly.

Domain Prices

A few years ago the South African domain registrar announced a schedule of co.za domain price increases, which they stuck to. This effect is felt these days and of course, we need to pass on the annual increases to clients. The prices of international domains do not fluctuate that much but the Rand / Dollar exchange rate does, and in similar fashion, from July we will be making a small adjustment to these prices.

Out with the Old, In with the New

So it has been more than five years that the Infinity Web logo has been in use and it has served us well. But a small revamp every now and again is perhaps a good approach, as such we made some enhancements to our logo but still kept the general feel of the brand mostly the same. In any event, a client is typically more interested in a company and not the logo, so we made some other changes as well.

WordPress Plus

In the last 6 months we have seen an increase in security issues with WordPress websites, especially when not kept up to date with the latest versions. As such we are introducing a new WordPress Plus hosting package which will allow us to specifically do basic security maintenance on all the client WordPress websites as typically the management of such websites would be a client’s responsibility in the absence of a support agreement. More information will sent directly to each individual client.

Updated Hosting Packages

Apart from the new hosting package, all website and email packages either have increased diskspace, bandwidth, email accounts or a combination of all 3. There will also be a new feature where we will monitor and asses Google Services linked to your website. Lastly, we have also secured two new hosting platforms, one specifically for Microsoft hosting clients and one for PHP / cPanel clients. Lastly, for the first time we will be able to provide clients access to control panels for the maintenance of email accounts and the likes.

Value Added Tax

Starting March 1st (or perhaps sooner) we will be registered for Value Added Tax which will impact our hosting prices. For this reason, we have decided to revamp our website and email offering to lessen the effect of VAT.
